About North Shore Water Polo

Development-first water polo built for long-term athletic growth. For male and female athletes in grades 1–12, from complete beginners to experienced players.

Our Philosophy

We believe that a strong local program benefits the entire region. By introducing water polo to the early childhood communities of Highland Park, Deerfield, Lake Forest, and our neighbors in Bannockburn, Glencoe and beyond, we are building a more vibrant, high-IQ athletic culture for everyone. We aren't here to force early specialization; we are here to build a physical and mental foundation that lasts a lifetime.

Our Approach Focuses on:

Foundations

Build strong athletic foundations early

Confidence

Develop game IQ and confidence over time

Preparation

Prepare athletes for high school competition in a positive, structured environment

Who This Program is for:

Led by Founder Ryan Castle

Ryan Castle is more than a Highland Park resident—he is one of the most experienced water polo educators in the region.

With 16 years of collegiate coaching experience at elite programs including Hawai’i, Michigan, Indiana, and Arizona State, Ryan has coached and developed Olympians and Collegiate All-Americans at the highest levels of the sport.

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Ryan began his career as a high school teacher and multi-sport coach, working across golf, rugby, field hockey, tennis, and squash. This background shaped his belief in Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and the value of multi-sport participation.

After helping lead the Stevenson High School girls program to three consecutive state championships, Ryan embraced the opportunity to build a championship culture at Highland Park High School as the boys varsity coach and within the broader North Shore community.

What Makes Us Different

If you walk into an NSWPA practice, don't expect silent laps and rigid drills. You’ll hear music, high-energy coaching, and constant movement.

THE GAME IS THE TEACHER

We believe athletes learn best through play. Our practices are instruction-rich and game-based, designed to develop “Water Polo IQ”, the ability to read the game, make decisions, and adapt in real time.

We advocate for the multi-sport athlete. Our program provides a healthy alternative to the year-round grind, allowing kids to grow without overuse, pressure, or fatigue.

We are a family-first organization. Whether your child is a 1st grader picking up a ball for the first time or an HPHS athlete training for a state title, they are part of a collaborative, supportive community.

Our Approach

Traditional youth clubs often prioritize volume, attendance, and year-round commitment. We take a more thoughtful approach—one that puts learning, balance, and long-term development first.

Instruction Over Attendance

We don’t count yards, we teach understanding. Our focus is on why the game works, not just repetition.

Mentorship Over Membership

Our coaches are educators first. Every athlete receives guidance rooted in long-term development, regardless of how far they pursue the sport.

Seasonal Enrollment

Families enroll in seasonal sessions, not lifetime contracts. Our programs are designed to support your child’s life, not dominate it.

Our Role in the Community

North Shore Water Polo is proud to call the Highland Park High School pool our home. We are committed to expanding access to aquatic sports and keeping kids engaged in the water—especially those who may otherwise drift away due to boredom or burnout.

We are building something lasting:
a culture of excellence, balance, and opportunity — one athlete at a time.

Welcome to North Shore Water Polo.
